The Big Conference

Impressions from Bethan Jones Parry, president of Dyfodol, on The Big Conference with First Minister Carwyn Jones in Aberystwyth on July 4th

“A process not an event” – these words are a modern cliche by now. And the Firstt Miister acknowledged exactly that when he opened “A Living Language: The Big Conference” in Aberystwyth, but he didn’t apologise for that.

He told the 150 delegates there that the conference needed to be considered in that context in order to “secure a future for the Welsh language” adding that starting a discussion like this was long overdue in order to find new ways to strengthen and develop the language.

All delegates were there by invitation – a mistake according to some – though many more were following the event online and contributing comments via Twitter. Continue reading

Welcoming Cabinet reshuffle

Welsh language group Dyfodol i’r Iaith welcome the fact the First Minister Carwyn Jones will now be responsible for the Welsh language. This will give the language a status across the whole range of the government’s work. Dyfodol hope that the First Minister will offer leadership to his  ministers in the cabinet with regard to the Welsh Language. Chair of Dyfodol, Heini Gruffudd, said “The Welsh language needs to be considered across all government portfolios, from the economy to planning, from education to health, from housing to communities. With the responsibility for the Welsh language sitting within the First Minister’s office I am confident that the language will have appropriate attention.”.

Dyfodol is looking forward to arranging an early meeting with Carwyn Jones to discuss matters relating to the language

Dyfodol calls for pro-Welsh economic development

Dyfodol i’r Iaith has submitted proposals to the Welsh Assembly’s Task and Finish Group on the Welsh Language and Economic Development. Among a wide range of recommendations, it says jobs should be created and moved to a selected number of Welsh “growth towns” outside Cardiff.
